Hurricanes

Hurricane season starts on June 1st and ends on November 30th, which means we spend six months under threat of these atmospheric events. One of the most important pieces of advice for this season is to prepare in advance. Below, you will find suggestions that will help you determine your personal risks and take the necessary steps to protect your family and your home.

Prepare in advance

  • Make sure your property insurance is still active and check whether the current coverage reflects any home improvements made or power generation equipment acquired.
  • You should become familiar with your coverage and deductibles, as well as the requirements you should meet before filing a claim. If you have any questions or want to make changes, please contact your insurance agent.
  • Consider purchasing flood insurance, as conventional property insurance does not cover such damages.
  • Make an inventory of your belongings, including pictures and video. This will help expedite the process in the event of a claim.
  • Store all your important documents (i.e., insurance policies, birth and marriage certificates, deeds, bank account numbers, cash, passports, and others) in waterproof containers, and keep them in an accessible place in case of an emergency.
  • Plan in advance in case you need to acquire other power sources, such as generators or renewable energy systems. If you already have such systems, make sure you know how to operate them safely and that their maintenance is up to date.

Before the hurricane

  • Cover windows and doors with hurricane shutters or wooden planks.
  • Remove any objects the wind could turn into projectiles.
  • Set up a first aid kit with your family’s maintenance medications, and keep it in a visible, safe, and accessible place.
  • Take your pets into account when making plans.
  • Stock up on enough safe drinking water and non-perishable food for at least seven days for each family member, as well as candles, flashlights, batteries, battery-operated radios, and a gas stove or any other alternative cooking method.
  • Protect your belongings as best as you can, and if your home is in a floodable area, please seek shelter in a safe place. If you leave your home, do not forget to bring your food, water, medications, and important documents with you.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged at all times.

During the hurricane

  • Stay inside your home or in a safe place, and do not leave until you are officially notified that the danger has passed.
  • Stay informed about what is happening, be it via radio, portable TV, or internet.
  • Disconnect all electrical equipment.

After the hurricane

  • If your home has suffered damages, first ensure it is in adequate living conditions.
  • Make only the emergency repairs necessary to protect your property against additional damages.
  • Take pictures or video of your home and damaged items.
  • Prepare an inventory of the damages and request estimates for the repairs.
  • File your claim as soon as possible.
  • Write down the claim number and keep it in a safe place.
  • Cover your ceilings, walls, and windows until your insurance company adjuster inspects the property.
